Rental Phone Calls – Toktumi – The Service I picked

As we started renting properties I had to search for solutions for phone calls.  I had a two major requirements:

  • I wanted a local number versus a 1-800 number… I am sure a 1-800 number would work, but I think people are less likely to call it.
  • I didn’t want to give out my cell phone number to tenants, but I wanted to be able to forward calls to any number I picked

After a lot of searching I ended up picking a service called Toktumi (pronounced Talk to Me) and I have been really happy with the service provided.

They have a web interface where I can add/remove extensions, see my call log, listen to voicemails, etc.  Another awesome feature is they have an app for my Blackberry and iPad that allows me to make calls, text messages and listen to voicemails.  It really makes life easy and I can easily forward the number to someone else if I am out of town or busy in meetings all day.

My only complaint is I wish they had an easier way to dial outgoing numbers.  Maybe they do and I don’t know about it.  But basically I have to first dial my number, hit 2 and then dial whatever number I want for the Caller ID to come up as my rental number.  It is kind of a pain to do from my car.

Check it out, Toktumi.

Hi Steve its Peter Sisson from Toktumi. If you get the app Line2 (available for iPod, iPad, and iPhone, and for Android next week (12/15/10)) you can make calls easily from your mobile device, either over cellular when in your car, or over WiFi when you are back at home or in the office. Hope that helps.

Hi Peter – thanks for visiting. I have a Blackberry which it seems is no longer supported? Cool service though, thanks!

I use google voice. They have an iphone app (maybe blackberry too?) that lets you put all the numbers you want into a “quick dial” list. Then I just select my tenant from that list and call or text them from within the app
